American Singer Canary in Song
The Canary's Nest has become a "passion" for its owner, Marvin B. Walton.  It began in 1995 in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  My interest in birds came from a long association with other types of aviary work.  My father and two brothers have over 20 years experience in raising game birds.  Together they hatched and reared in excess of over 40 breeds of quail, pheasant and partridge.  Always interested in avian work and birds, I decided to try my hand at canary breeding, something that did not require the space necessary for game bird breeding.

What a beauty!
A Beautiful Red Factor Canary
I began with Red Factors, a breed that is not normally recommended for beginners, not because of the difficulty in breeding them, but Red Factors have a tendency to "let the breeder down" by not performing their breeding tasks as readily as other birds.  I obtained my breeding stock from one of the best - if not the best - Red Factor canary breeders in the United States, Mr. Robert Dyer.  I have Red Factors in all colors from light to dark in melanin and lipochromes.

The Canary's Nest is proudly working to maintain the best strain of Red Factors available anywhere that are "COLOR-BRED NOT COLOR-FED."  My birds are carefully selected to produce the highest quality birds for color as well as conformation.   I am striving to produce new colors and mutations using existing genetic qualities already inherent in the breeding birds genes.

I am what most breeders would consider a small time breeder, currently maintaining 60 breeding pairs of canaries, not all of which are Red Factors. I also have  Spanish Timbrados, I am working on creating a line of Red German Rollers. I do not cross my canary breeds with each other; I strive to propagate the species to maintain purity to the maximum form available. I use closed bands that are traceable to the bird clubs from which they are obtained. For Red Factors the band used is the initials NCA followed by a number, and the year that the bird was hatched.
